VIAGENS INVISÍVEIS é uma residência artística, concebida pelas artistas Ana Fonseca, Carla Cabanas, Mónica de Miranda e Susana Anágua, que terá lugar de 11 de Outubro a 8 de Novembro em São Tomé e Príncipe. Do programa de actividades constam um período de criação em residência, um Open Day, workshops para crianças orientados pelas artistas e uma exposição integrada na 7ª Bienal Internacional de São Tomé e Príncipe.
As artistas propõem, com esta residência, explorar a ideia de viagem como metáfora de entendimento e conhecimento, colocando a experiência do lugar em confronto com a experiência do olhar.
O nome do projecto é tomado de empréstimo à obra de Italo Calvino “As Cidades Invisíveis”, na qual o autor coloca um ficcional Marco Polo a descrever 55 maravilhosas cidades, cujas histórias são mais valiosas do que qualquer riqueza que delas provenha. As VIAGENS INVISÍVEIS destas 4 artistas desenham trajectos que questionam as ideias de viagem, viajante, estrangeiro. A rota que as leva de Lisboa a São Tomé produz deslocamentos dinâmicos, não só físicos, no território, mas também deslocamentos no plano das ideias, capazes de produzir outros olhares e outras narrativas. O projecto pretende assim activar novas direcções dentro do campo dos processos criativos, desde as práticas colaborativas às participativas e de envolvimento através da diversidade de acções criativas e e especificas in situ.
Ana Fonseca irá criar Monumentos Efémeros no contexto do projecto Viagens INVISÍVEIS. Aqui o monumento temporário é assumido pela artista como uma solução para a arte pública urbana do presente. Intervenções transitórias que celebram os grandes e pequenos acontecimentos, pessoas e lugares, criando assim um objecto a partir de uma premissa meta-ficcionada. A concretização do mesmo dependerá da vivência em São Tomé e das experiências no local
Carla Cabanas irá desenvolver um projecto a partir de reproduções de antigos postais de São Tomé e Príncipe. Estes postais funcionam, por um lado, como um retrato histórico de um país, e por outro, como um elemento funcional para a troca de memórias e afectos entre quem fica e quem parte. Continuando uma prática de intervenção sobre a fotografia, a artista irá tratar do desvanecimento da imagem relacionando-o com a partida, a ausência e a saudade.
Mónica de Miranda irá realizar, recorrendo ao vídeo, performance e fotografia, uma reflexão sobre o imaginário da ilha de São Tomé, nas suas múltiplas histórias e na sua relação com a paisagem e com o conceito das viagens invisíveis. A artista vai abordar metaforicamente mitos e lendas em relação com a paisagem do arquipélago de São Tomé.
Susana Anágua irá apresentar na Cacau um projecto que parte da relação entre duas das cidades descritas no livro de Calvino; Octávia e Ercilia juntam-se e as suas metáforas tomam forma para a construção de uma instalação vídeo, onde se salientam questões importantes: teias de relacionamento humanoversus fisicalidade do espaço novo, S.Tomé, a sua arquitectura e indústria/máquina.

Ana Fonseca (São Paulo, 1978) vive e trabalha em Lisboa.
Licenciou-se na Middlesex University, Londres (2003).
Das exposições individuais destacam-se: “Almack’s#1”, peça em exposição permanente no Museu Nacional dos Coches de Lisboa desde 2011; “Viagem Pitoresca e Histórica a Portugal”.

Carla Cabanas (Lisboa, 1979) vive e trabalha em Lisboa.
Licenciou-se em Artes Plásticas pela ESAD-CR (2003), concluiu o curso da Escola Maumaus (2004) e frequentou o curso de fotografia do Programa Gulbenkian Criatividade e Criação Artística (2008). Concluiu uma Pós-graduação em Produção e Criação em Artes Tecnológicas na Universidade Lusófona (2009). Participou nas residências “MobileHome” (2009) e “Transitante” (2012). Ganhou uma Menção Honrosa no Prémio de Fotografia Purificacion Garcia (2012) e o terceiro prémio de Pintura Ariane de Rothschild (2005). E recebeu uma Bolsa do Programa INOV-Art para residir em Antuérpia na Belgica (2010/2011).
Expõe regularmente desde 2000, destacam-se as individuais: “O que ficou do que foi – O Álbum desconhecido” na Sala do Veado (2012); “A casa onde nasci e outras histórias” na Galeria Carlos Carvalho (2009). Das exposições colectivas destacam-se as realizadas no Arquivo Municipal Fotográfico de Lisboa, Laboratório das Artes em Guimarães, Círculo de Belas Artes em Madrid, CCCB – Barcelona e na Sede da Fundação Gulbenkian em Lisboa.
Mónica de Miranda (Porto, 1976) vive e trabalha entre Lisboa e Londres.
Licenciada em Artes Plásticas na Camberwell College of Arts (Londres, 1998) e Mestre em Artes e Educação do Instituto de Educação (Londres, 2001), está actualmente a terminar o seu doutoramento na Middlesex University (Londres), como bolseira da FCT.
Mónica de Miranda foi uma das fundadoras da Rede Triangle Network em Portugal, respectivamente coordenou as residências artísticas: “Transitante” (2012) e “Home and Abroad” (2010). Participou em várias residências das quais se destacam: “Hotel Tropico” (Luanda, 2012), “O.u.t” (Capacete, Rio de Janeiro, 2011), “Muyehlekete” (Museu Nacional de Arte, Maputo, 2008). Das suas exposições individuais destacam-se: : “Erosion” (Appleton Square, Lisboa, 2013), “An Ocean Between us” (Plataforma Revolver, Lisboa, 2012), “Novas geografias” (198 Gallery, Londres / Plataforma Revólver, Lisboa / Imagem HF, Amsterdam, 2008). Susana Anágua (Lisboa,1976) vive e trabalha em Lisboa.
Mestrado em Digital Arts pela Universidade de Artes de Londres (Camberwell College of Arts) e licenciatura em Artes Plásticas na Escola Superior de Artes e Design (ESAD) das Caldas da Rainha, onde também lecciona desde 2009.
Das exposições individuais destacam-se: em 2012, Olhar Radar, Graphos:Brasil, Rio de Janeiro ou em 2008, “Desnorte/Northless”, sala de projetos do Centro de Arte Moderna da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian , Lisboa.
Tem obras em colecções tais como: Fundação Lígia Clark – Brasil, CAMJAP, Centro de Arte Moderna da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, MACE – Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Elvas ou Fundação PLMJ.
Expõe regularmente em Portugal e no estrangeiro. É artista representada pela Galeria Graphos – Rio de Janeiro – Brasil.

VIAGENS INVISÍVEIS is an artistic residence, designed by the artists Ana Fonseca, Carla Cabanas, Mónica de Miranda and Susana Anagua, which will take place from 11 October to 8 November 2013 in São Tomé and Principe. Program activities include a period of artisticcreation in residence, an Open Day, children’s workshops guided by the artists and an exhibition integrated in the 7th International Biennale of São Tomé and Principe.
With this residence, the artists propose to explore the idea of travel as a metaphor for understanding and knowledge, placing the experience of the place in comparison with the experience of looking.
The project name is borrowed from the work of Italo Calvino “Invisible Cities” in which the author uses a fictional Marco Polo to describe 55 wonderful cities, whose stories are more valuable than any wealth that comes from them. The invisible journeys (VIAGENS INVISÍVEIS) taken by these four artists draw paths that question the ideas of journey, traveler, abroad. The route that leads from Lisbon to São Tomé produces dynamic displacements, not only physical, in the territory, but also shifts in terms of ideas, enabling them to produce other viewpoints and other narratives. The project thus aims to enable new directions within the field of the creative process, from collaborative practices to participatory and involvement through the diversity of creative actions and specific in situ.
Ana Fonseca will create Ephemeral Monuments under the project invisible journeys. Here the temporary memorial is assumed by the artist as a solution to urban public art of the present. Transitional interventions that celebrate the great and small events, people and places, thus creating an object from a meta-fictional premise. The realization of it will depend on the experience in São Tomé.
Carla Cabanas will develop a project from reproductions of old postcards of São Tomé and Principe. These postcards work, on the one hand, as a historical portrait of a country, and secondly, as a functional element to exchange memories and affections between who stays and who leaves. Continuing a practice of intervention on photographs, the artist will handle the fading image relating it to the ideas of leaving, the absence and longing.
Mónica de Miranda will create a reflection on the imaginary of the island of São Tomé, in its multiple stories and their relationship with the landscape and with the concept of travel unseen. The artist will discuss myths and legends metaphorically in relation to the landscape of the archipelago of São Tomé, using using video, performance and photography.
Susana Anágua will present a project based on the relationship between two of the cities described in Calvino’s book; Octavia and Ercilia are joined together and its metaphors take shape for the construction of a video installation, which highlight important issues: webs of human relationship versus physicality of the new space, São Tomé, its architecture and industry / machine.

She graduated from Middlesex University, London (2003).

Carla Cabanas (Lisbon, 1979) lives and works in Lisbon.
She graduated in Fine Arts from the ESAD-CR (2003), the School Maumaus (2004) and attended the photography course the Gulbenkian Creativity and Artistic Creation (2008). Completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Production and Creation in Technological Arts in Lusophone University (2009). Participated in residencies “Mobilehome” (2009) and “Transiting”(2012). Won an Honorable Mention in Photography Prize Purificacion Garcia (2012) and the third prize of Painting Ariane de Rothschild (2005). And received a purse INOV-Art to reside in Antwerp in Belgium (2010/2011).
She has exhibited regularly since 2000, there are the individual: “What became of it was – The Unknown album” Living in the Stag (2012), “The house where I was born and Other Stories” Gallery in Carlos Carvalho (2009). Of group exhibitions include those performed in the Municipal Archive Photo of Lisbon, Laboratory of Arts in Guimarães, Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, CCCB – Barcelona and at the Headquarters of the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.
Monica Miranda (Porto, 1976) lives and works between Lisbon and London.
Degree in Fine Arts at Camberwell College of Arts (London, 1998) and a Master of Arts and Education at the Institute of Education (London, 2001), is currently finishing her PhD at Middlesex University (London), a scholarship from FCT.
Monica de Miranda was a founder of the Triangle Network Networking in Portugal, respectively coordinated the artistic residencies: “Transiting” (2012) and “Home and Abroad” (2010).
